I recently bought 6 new crabs and 3 were painted. One couldn't wait to change and one of the natural had a shell that is not usually wanted by hc's and he changed quickly also. I finally put all 12 of the crabs together in a newly cleaned and decorated tank and I'm just letting them rest for about a week to help lower the stress before I start trying to handle them too much. I recently bought a jumbo crab with a cow shell with large protruding horns. He changed into a natural shell about a week later, and he looks much better. It is said that like other creatures who have been domesticated to attempt to set them free even in their native land is almost a guaranteed death sentence too. Through living in captivity they have lost most of their instincts needed for survival in the wild. Hermies are also known to be territorial and he may not be accepted by the other hermies if he would happen to come across any in the wild.
